In the fall, I shared about a company called Little Red’s Schoolhouse. I’m excited to be sharing their other store – The Book Umbrella. Run by a team of sisters, one – a graphic designer and the other a freelance education writer, this store focuses on providing quality novel study materials for popular children’s books.
A couple of novel studies come in a set – like the one for Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web. This bundle includes a complete study of both books.
These studies are very detailed – offering teachers a great way to ensure their students are comprehending everything they are reading. Broken down into chunks of a few chapters at a time, each section includes a page called:
- Dictionary Detective – have kids jump into their dictionaries to define new words in that section
- Vocabulary Study – word matching, fill in the blanks, etc to help ensure word comprehension
- Understanding the Story – multiple choice and sentence/paragraph answer questions about what’s going on in the story at this point.
- Chapter Summary – open ended questions about the chapter segment and how they are enjoying the story
In addition to this, there are printable student pages to use to make their own notebooks, pre-reading critical thinking questions, some in-depth researching questions into the author, and character charts to learn more about the characters in the book. After the book is done, there is a short test and a reading log.
There’s even an answer key for the teacher.
