Canadian sisters Kristen and Katie – one a former ESL teacher, the other a graphic designer – decided to team up and make some very cute and educational products for their fellow educators. That teamwork has resulted in their company, Little Red’s Schoolhouse – where you can find all sorts of goodies and educational materials in their TPT (formerly Teachers Pay Teachers) store.
One such product is their 2 part set on Terry Fox which they sent me to review.
If you are looking for a fun (and cute!) way to learn more about Terry Fox with your kids, these 2 sets are a fantastic choice. They seem appropriate for kids in the grade 1-4 range.
The History Makers : The Story of Terry Fox
This book has both a colour and black & white version of the Terry Fox story, and his Marathon of Hope. It gives details outlining his experience and his mission in a style that is easy for kids to read. Following that, there are several sheets of activities to develop story comprehension and understand the importance of Terry’s life. These include journal prompts, true & false statements, a web chart, and more. Plus – there’s also a complete section with answers!
This craftivity book offers a few different ways to have your students write about Terry Fox. There are four activities: a flip book, a shape book, a ring book, and a character display that you can attach sheets of paper that the kids can write about Terry Fox on. The smaller booklets would be a terrific addition to a lapbook on important Canadians, or the fight against cancer, or similar. There are instructions to explain how to put each together.
These made a great discussion starter with my boys about cancer, why people raise money, and how a person could run on a prosthetic leg. We even talked about if homeschoolers could put together a Terry Fox run event. Great conversations.
How can you get them?
You can order them directly off a site called Teachers Pay Teachers.
