The changing seasons are a curious thing for kids. What kinds of things happen when the season moves from summer to fall to winter? Here are some great books to read about these changes.

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak.

A picture book with gorgeous artwork illustrations, this story follows the wanderings of a young girl through a late summer day as she observes the world making changes towards fall, like the colours of leaves, animals making preparations, the chill in the wind, etc. Reading wise, the  words on each page are just a line or two, making it a perfect book for little ones.

Sleep Tight Farm by Eugenie Doyle.

The subtitle of this book is “A Farm Prepares for Winter,” and aptly so, as we watch a family work to get their farm ready for the arrival of winter: harvesting the produce, covering the berry fields in straw, stacking wood, making a chicken coop, putting the equipment in the barn.  I love how the illustrations frequently compare the same scene of them working in both the fall and also in the high point of summer, so you can see how different it looks. The text is gentle and rhythmic, with the repetition of “Good night.” This book is a great way to visualize the work involved to get a farm ready for winter.

The Wish Tree by Kyo Maclear.

Charles wants to find a wish tree, so off he and his Boggan go to try and find one. It’s already winter in this story as the little boy and his toboggan head off on their adventure, but you can see how the season affects the animals as he wanders around. There are hibernating bears, squirrels storing nuts, beavers taking wood to their lodge, etc. As the day comes to a close, Charles still hasn’t found a wish tree. Will he find it?! I appreciate stories that don’t need a whole lot of text, and this story what I’d consider to be just the right amount – enough to keep the story going, but not a pageful.
