“Transported back through time on the Canadian Flyer, an antique red sled, Emily Bing and Matt Martinez experience the past first hand. Each thrilling adventures takes them to a different part of the country at a fascinating point in our rich history. Come along for the ride of your life!

It’s Emily and Matt’s very first journey into the past. Join them as they meet fearsome pirates face to face and venture high into the Far North. Adventure awaits!”

This is the first book of a continuing series of adventures of new neighbours and friends, Emily and Matt. When Emily’s family moves into her Great Aunt’s old house, she discovers a tower with a personal note to her, a magical sled, and a drawer full of interesting artifacts. Before long, they find themselves aboard the ship in Canada’s Arctic explorer, Martin Frobisher in 1577.

Although a fairly short book, it’s perfect for the young reader. Somehow within these pages, author Frieda Wishinsky manages to not only provide our characters with a chance to be part of a moment of Canadian history, but also introduces the experience of what life on an exploration ship would be like (maggot-filled biscuits, anyone?!), the harsh reality of pirating, the culture of the Inuit people, and the early conflicts between Europeans and the Inuit.

The Canadian Flyer series is often compared to the Magic Treehouse books, but with a Canadian context. It’s nice to have something for Canadian kids to read and feel part of!

After the story, you will find the back of the book filled with lots of extras – including top 10 lists from both of the main characters about the things in the story (about the Inuit and about pirates for this book) and a great series of answers written by the author related to questions about the history.

Although these books are no longer in print, you could look for Canadian Flyer books at your local library or second hand.
