This is My Home, This is My School {Book Review}

Kids love books they can relate to. ย Kids who go to school get a wide selection of book titles to dive into that allow them the chance to relate to their educational experience. But the options for homeschooled kids are much smaller. In fact, are there any?

With this in mind,ย I am super excited to share a brand new picture book from Jonathan Bean, an author who was homeschooled himself, all about life as a homeschooler. This is my Home, This is my School.

This is My Home, This is My School - a book about life as a homeschooler

The story features a little boy who takes you on a tour of his house and school – both inside and out.

This is my home.
And this is my school.
What, confused? Okay, allow me to explain.

He carefully introduces his mom and sisters, and then reintroduces them as his teacher and classmates. Then you get to see all the different classrooms, and the playground, and even the trusty school bus that takes them on field trips. ย When Dad gets home…… well, let’s say the learning doesn’t stop.

I read this book to my kids and we all loved it. Not only is the text fun – and a great way to showcase the way home and school are connected but the artwork is perfect.ย  My kids laughed when they saw the full page spread with a somewhat busy and chaotic living room, with stuff and kids everywhere. They instantly related. It was definitely like our house while we have school time!

At the end of the book, the author shares pictures and a short note about his own experiences with homeschooling while growing up. It makes the story even more special for the reader because they know the author has experienced life like them and that he just “knows.”

I give this book a huge thumbs up. It is so nice to have a book that homeschool kids can relate to and enjoy.

What room of your house do you think people would be the most surprised to consider a classroom?

  1. The room that is most surprising to be a classroom would be the bathroom! we use the bathroom mirror to work on phonics and the bathtub as a sensory tub for chemistry activities, like mixing colours!

  2. We do most of our work at our dining room table – but we also do lots of learning in the car! Probably the top two places where things are “learned”!

  3. What room of your house do you think people would be surprised to consider a classroom?
Our kitchen! My children learn so much in our kitchen while cooking. They learn about safety, hot and cold, combining ingredients, they learn numbers and reading instructions. Most people think there should be a designated area with a desk, but in our house our classroom is all around us!

  4. I think people would be surprised I can say my bedroom is a classroom! When someone is sick or we are having a lazy day we all hop on mama’s bed and snuggle in for some learning, even if it’s just stories or a documentary on the laptop ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I would say the bathroom, we use foam letters in the bathtub for word building, and do sink or swim experiments to see what type of things float and what doesn’t.

  6. I think the laundry room would be the strangest room for us. I work on the laundry and my son does his work in there with me, free from the distractions of his younger sisters. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Everywhere Lol no but seriously out bathroom either one, whether its learning about laundry or an experiment in the tub lol

  8. The hammock in our backyard is our favourite homeschooling location in the summer… sitting under the trees reading a good book, sketching or just watching the clouds ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. The kitchen, definitely. Part of the learning is the cleaning up and, once we’re done, it rarely looks like we were in the kitchen at all. I’m not sure why the rest of the house can’t follow the kitchen’s example. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. Alexandria Kerlow

Our living room! Its full of hundreds of books, games, our TV and internet, has our dining table, and an unending amount of craft supplies. That is definitely where we do most of our learning at home.

  11. I would think that people would be surprised to consider anyone using the bathroom as a classroom — but now that I think about it, my middle child learned all her letters of the alphabet using foam letters in the bath LOL! But learning happens everywhere at our house, we have no classroom ๐Ÿ™‚

    What a great book idea!

  12. We live in a teeny, tiny house so I don’t think there’s a single room that we don’t use! That being said, I do think the most surprising is my bedroom. Mom and Dad’s bed is perfect for kicking back and listening to read-alouds. We have a TV for checking out documentaries and my desk usually has someone sitting at it working on an assignment!!

  13. I think people would be surprised to know that the whole house and vehicle is a classroom. Learning never stops whether you are doing worksheets at the kitchen table, watching a video in the living room, or encouraging a love of reading while reading a story at bedtime in bed! That is the glory of homeschooling ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. What a super book! I think it would be the bedroom. In bed reading, talking or just snuggling watching you tube.

  15. Probably the bathroom – this is where we do a lot of water play activities that teach things like counting and motor skills (pouring water from one cup to another)

  16. I don’t know if there is a room in our house that hasn’t served as a “classroom” at some point! ๐Ÿ™‚ Bathroom? Bedroom? Snuggled up, all cosy in bed with Jammie’s on, has to be the best “classroom” ever!

  17. We are just starting our journey and I would say most if our learning happens in the eating area or the TV room. One has a keyboard and all our supplies and the other has a lovely rug to stretch out on and work.

  18. My bedroom. This is our first year homeschooling and Im really trying to just go along with it. I have 3 kids and one spirited little guy. I have to keep everything where he cant get into it so we do a lot in our bedroom just hanging out on the bed. Also the kitchen table works great!

  19. The most surprising room… could be the living room! But we do extra school activities sitting on the couch, like looking at youtube videos of animals we read about during the science lesson.

  20. I think people would be surprised that we do a lot of our learning in the kitchen and living room. We have an actual classroom set up downstairs but we don’t even go there everyday.

  21. It wouldn’t be a surprise to other homeschool families but we do a lot of learning in the bedroom. Stories at bed, reading in the middle of the day surrounded by stuffies and the children’s favourite things it seems a great place to absorb a lot of very important information!

  22. We bought this book from our local Mulberry Bush bookstore and have loved it! My boys are in school now, but that doesn’t stop us being a homeschooling family. I have more time for different ideas now! I am not so burnt out and they are energized by the concept of homework from school. Once homeschoolers, always homeschoolers.
We love to do our work at the dining room table or our Grandfather’s breakfast bar. I get to do dishes while they industrious bend their heads over their work. Happy learning to you all this day!
