“Nell lives in a lighthouse on Canada’s spectacular west coast. Her father thinks it’s no place for a girl, but Nell tries to be helpful so he won’t send her away to school.
So when the government runs a telegraph line to the lighthouse, Nell teaches herself Morse Code. And when the Valencia gets in trouble on the rocks below, Nell sends her first SOS.
Later, Nell gets another chance to help. After a furious storm, another ship, the Coloma, runs into danger in the Graveyard of the Pacific. This time the telegraph lines are down and her father is away. What can Nell do?”
Graveyard of the Sea is the fourth book in Penny Draper’s Disaster Strikes series – and this time she takes us to the early 1900s, in the isolation found at the edge of the Pacific coastline where we find 12 year old, Nell living in a lighthouse with her father and grandfather.
I love that the main character of this story is a strong, determined girl. Not willing to bow to the societal norms of what a girl should or shouldn’t be doing, Nell takes her own fears in stride and does what needs to happen.
The author managed to present a clear insight into the life of a lighthouse keeper, the interactions between the First Nations peoples and the white people, and especially the way that life changed when telegraphs opened up a whole new world.
Although this book publisher is no longer in business, you could look for their books at your local library or second hand.
