This page is designed to help provide you with resources to teach your child at this level and to give you some confidence as you tackle this adventure. It focuses on the core subjects, but you can add in any extras that you would like to include. The resources listed are based on the various curriculum learning outcomes presented by the provinces and territories.

SOCIAL STUDIES

In this unit, students dive into ancient history including the early days, Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome before heading to the Middle Ages.
- World History - this is a free unit study on ancient history. If you aren't comfortable including the Old Testament as part of the study, skip ahead to the 2nd unit: Ancient Egypt. There are references to Christianity within the lessons, but you can just skip whatever doesn't line up with your own values. There are lots of great resources listed. If you don't have access to the recommended books, use what you do have around the house or can find online. You shouldn't need to buy any new books unless you want to.
- Ancient Civilizations: Lessons, Activities, and Projects. Make some interesting research learning projects about various ancient historical civilizations.
And an online edition of a World History Textbook.
Make sure to preview these lessons to make sure that they are appropriate for your child.
This is not an easy topic to tackle, but this unit covers the experience of our Indigenous community with Residential schools.

In this unit, students explore machines like gears, wheels, pulleys, wedges, inclined planes, and screws.

- LEGO Simple Machines Unit: If you have access to different kinds of bricks, this lesson plan gets you hands-on with simple machines.
- Forces and Simple Machines: This is a multi-lesson resource. It is intended for a classroom, but you can adapt to home. Lessons start around page 18.

- Videos - these are from the old tv show "Eureka." Type the episode you would like to watch in the box at the bottom. Episodes 11-15 are about simple machines.

In this unit, students explore the systems in the human body.
Here are some Parent-Interactive resources. Although most of these are intended for a classroom setting, you can complete most of these lessons and activities at home.
- Human Body Unit Study. A 13 lesson study of the systems of the human body. She has links to videos and resources as well as questions for her students to research. It's based on a textbook that is not available online (although they have additional weblinks). Use whatever books you have available or get your child to research the answers online.
- Human Body Systems for Students: Based on the Yukon curriculum, this resource examines the bodies of humans and a few animals like bears and caribou. It has hands on activities and some worksheets as well.
- Your Body's Systems: A reading and worksheet based program with links to some interactive activities

In this unit, students explore the differences between mixtures and solutions.
Here are some Parent-Interactive Resources. Although most of these are intended for a classroom setting, you can complete most of these lesson and activities at home.
- Properties and Changes of Materials: These are all kinds of hands-on activities related to liquids, solids, and gasses. There is one lesson that includes litmus paper, but you can likely just skip that lesson if you don't have access to any.
- Mixtures and Solutions: Hands-on activities including trail mix and a bottle of liquids. There is a lot of teacher jargon and information on this unit study, so just skip to the activities that start on page 8 and page 14. The rest of the file is more like a student report.

- The Great Picnic Mix-up: A Crash Course Kids Video
In British Columbia, instead of Household Chemistry, it's all about Rocks.
In this unit, students examine different kinds of rocks and minerals, and explore the rock cycle.
Here are some Parent-Interactive resources. Although most of these are intended for a classroom setting, you can complete most of these lessons and activities at home.
- Rocks and Minerals: An Indigenous-focused unit study on rocks and minerals.
- Rocks and Minerals Unit: Designed for a specific class, you might not be able to do every activity in this resource, but there are lots of lessons to choose from. (If you happen to have any chunks of minerals around to examine, there is an activity that will be perfect. Otherwise, you might have to make due looking up pictures on Google!)

In this unit, students explore forces such as pulling and pushing and how they make things move.

- Invisible Forces Science Lesson: A series of lessons about magnetism and static electricity. You need a variety of magnets for these activities.

WETLANDS ECOLOGY
In this unit, students study ponds and swamps and the life that exists there.

- Wetlands Stewards: Explore the wetlands with these lessons. Some of them can't be done because they are specific to a visit to this wetland, but most of them are. There are hands on games and activities along with printables.

PHYS.ED & HEALTH

Around this grade, the topic of puberty is often discussed. It's up to you if you feel comfortable with teaching or not. Here are some options:
- Changes in Me: A multi-lesson unit covering an introduction to puberty, the changes in male and female anatomy, body image, and healthy relationships.
- The Whole Story: For Girls | For Boys - Looking for a Christian perspective? This is a great program that covers sex, changes in the body during puberty, and more - including some really frank and candid conversations.
