LesPlan is a Canadian-based company that offers current event study materials through both printed publications and the web for students ranging in age from Grade 3 to 10. Although intended for schools, this is a perfect fit for homeschoolers as well. Each resources does require a membership, which is $180 per year, however you can split the cost amongst the members of a homeschooling group, as a school would, if you would like to have a more cost effective plan. Available in both French and English, you can choose to have the publication arrive in the mail or via download online.
The Canadian Reader is a publication that combines the visual appeal of comic strips to present ideas along with easy-to-read articles about current news events – this resource is designed for students in the grades 3 to 5 range. It’s this version that has a popular series called WebVoyagers, which features the adventures of three Canadian kids who take adventures exploring various areas of Canada. There are 3 articles to read through and examine each month. Your membership includes 8 editions.
What in the World (Level 1 & 2)
For the grade 5 to 7 crowd, this publication offers more in-depth looks at the newsworthy events from the previous month, intending to help kids think more about the world around them. This version has 4 feature articles to study, along with word challenges and other activities. Your membership is for 8 editions.
The Level 2 version of “What in the World” is written for the older students in grades 8 through 10.
This is a digital news site for kids that features a weekly news article written for students in grades 3 and up. Over the course of the school year (from mid-August to Mid-June) there are 40 articles presented. Homeschooling families can get a membership for $45/year instead of the $180 the schools pay.
