Ultimate Field Trip Guide – Canada

Canada is an amazing countryย – you can see and experience it from coast to coast through some unique and exciting destinations. Whether we’re taking a journey to a local attraction for a learning experience day, or travelling from one coast to the other, or even touring the country from in front of our computer screen – there are field trips all over Canada to explore.

Sharla, a Canadian homeschooling Mom with 7 kids, has created an amazing resource for any homeschooler, traveller, or Canadian explorer who wants to stop and see some great destinations. It’s called The Ultimate Guide to Field Trips in Canada, which you can find on her website, The Chaos and the Clutter. The Ultimate Guide to Field Trips in Canada by Sharla Kostelyk

Inside this 75 page e-Book, you will find the country broken down into each individual province and territory with an extensive list of field trip location ideas. Each of these has a brief explanation of what the location is along with their corresponding website links. Although Sharla is clear that her list is not every location available in each province, it IS very detailed. The destinations range from the high-interest tourist spots – like Niagara Falls, the Parliament Buildings of Canada, Calgary Zoo, Children’s Museums, etc – to the lesser known sites like Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump and Star Egg (an egg rating facility that does tours).

After these detailed provincial sections, the final segment provides a great list of ideas that you can use to look for some more local and intimate field trips in your community. Places like local farms, car shows, and pizzerias. It’s a great jumping point to think outside the box for a fun field trip experience.

One of the neat ideas is that you can use the links included to create a virtual field trip to some pretty awesome locations. Considering that it would take ages to visit each one in person (Road Trip, Anyone??), this is a fantastic way to learn more about our history and country.

There are over 600 destinations listed in this guide, which, I’d say really does make it live up to its name.

  1. Planning a road trip out East next year, stopping each way in Quebec and Ottawa and spending a week or two on the Bay of Fundy.

    1. Hi Marci, I am new to this group, but am from Montreal, so anytime you do decide to come and visit we would be more than happy to show you some nice spots.

    2. Hi Everyone, I am new to this site and would like to know if there are Montreal or Laval homeschoolers, to exchange ideas and os excursions?

  2. I would love to see the East coast – PEI is where my roots are and I have some dear friends in Gros Morne(spelling?) in Newfoundland. The pics have been amazing and would love to take some myself!!

  3. I would love to go to PEI – a lifelong dream – and see Cavendish beach, the red roads and of course Green Gables!

  4. Living in Western New York, I have visited Ontario many, many times. I would love to know more neat spots to go up there. Also on our wish list is Canadian Rockies by train, PEI, and somewhere in Eastern Canada for the 2015 World Cup!

I’d love to drive and see the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia! I’ve been to the east coast and it’s one of my favourite places of all time! I didn’t get to do the Cabot Trail that visit though!

  6. This book sounds fantastic. Not just for homeschool trips but to also maximize the things that can be done in your province. Road trip anyone?

    1. One of the people I’d consider my best friend currently lives in Nunavut. Her blog is full of amazing, beautiful photos and all her crazy North experiences. I’m living vicariously through her and loving all the pictures of the cool northern lights (but i am not jealous of so much snow. LOL).
