History By The Minute

We’ve all seen them on TV. Those one minute Canadian history blips that we chuckle at, but are secretly proud of for our Canadian patriotism. The thing about these short clips is that they are a great learning opportunity, giving a brief glance into moments of defining Canadian moments and people. And you can watch them all HERE

There are a lot more than I realized – ranging from historic moments like the Halifax explosion, the arrival of Jacques Cartier in Canada, the first playing of our National Anthem, the decision of the flag, to the battle at Vimy Ridge. There’s also tributes to great Canadians – be they inventors, film stars, musicians, national heroes, or althetes.

Many of the minutes come with lesson plans – mostly intended for the intermediate and secondary age range. (This link is for all the lesson plans. If you click on each individual video or radio broadcast, you will notice a list of additional options for that topic – be it a lesson plan or another broadcast, etc.)

Got A Minute?

There’s some great cameo appearances by some actors you might recognize – such as Pierce Brosnan and Graeme Greene.

In exciting news, they are in the process of making new minutes! Apparently, there will be 2 a year until 2017. Can’t wait to see.

(And, for the parents who want a chuckle – take a look on youtube for some of the parodies. Like Rick Mercer.  But be warned – most of them aren’t really kid-friendly).
