Hey Canada! Book Review

If you are looking for a great way to introduce your kids to the diversity of Canada, I highly recommend this new book by author, Vivien BowersHey Canada! I was sent a copy by the publisher to review.

Written in the style of a blog/journal by 9 year old Alice, as her, Gran, her 8 year old cousin Cal, and his pet Hamster take the road and go on a big adventure as they travel across Canada.

Starting in Newfoundland, and heading west towards BC then up through the territories – the journal includes lots of information on each province – including provincial flowers and birds, top tourism sites, and things to watch for (moose, red sand, pacific ocean, etc).

The book has a great combination between cartoon pictures and actual photographs of key things in each province, making it fun and real at the same time. My kids loved to look at the pictures.

Along the way, you will also find Cal’s voice interjecting in the journal through his tweets, fact sharing, and (my boys’ favourite) his “historical U-Turn” comic strips which make history fun!

Little Hamster seems to be a trouble maker (although cute!), and is always escaping or getting lost on the journey.

I highly recommend adding this book to your homeschool bookshelves. It’s a great introduction to our country, and extremely engaging for kids (and parents!). We’ve learned some great things as we’ve been working through it, and were able to use it as a stepping stone to additional provincial lessons!

This book can be purchased from book stores or online. Be sure to check out the Tundra Books blog, as they are having a daily giveaway of the book too during this blog tour!

Check out our review of another one of Vivien’s books, Wow Canada! Which is similar but more detailed for older children.

  3. There’s one review at amazon.ca that says there’s a major error in there — that Alberta’s provincial flower is incorrect. According to the reviewer, the book says that Alberta’s flower is the white trillium when it’s actually the wild rose. The trillium is Ontario’s flower… so what does it say for Ontario? Did you notice this error?

    1. @Heather – you are right! I went to check! (I never saw your comment pop up before so sorry for the long delay!) That’s unfortunate. It’s a terrific resource book. Hopefully the printers have caught it and editions going forward will have fixed the error.
