Crazy for Gold

Welcome to this month’s edition of Poppins’ Book Nook – a free monthly book club that offers you the opportunity to join in by reading a book and doing a related activity that fits into the theme of that month and an opportunity to link up your blog posts. It’s open to anyone – in any age range. I hope you’ll join in.

This month’s theme was the Wild West. Canada’s western history is vivid and exciting, but it was a little challenging to find a book that was designed for kids. I decided that would could have some fun looking at the Yukon Gold Rush.

About the Book

Title: Crazy for Gold: Canadian Flyer Adventures #3

Author: Frieda Wishinsky

Summary: Emily and Matt are on a Klondike adventure. Will they make it through the grueling climb to Chilkoot Pass summit? Or the dangerous trip down the rapids? Will they find gold? It’s a test of strength, daring, and quick wits.

What We Thought:

This is the 3rd book in the Canadian Flyer series – which follows the adventures of Emily and Matt, next door neighbours who have discovered a secret about an old sled in the attic. It takes them through time! In this adventure, the friends find themselves swept up in part of the Yukon gold rush fever of the 1800s. This book is fun – as usual – and gave the kids a great first insight into the excitement and dangers of the Klondike. The lure of finding gold is so strong! I love that these books are easy to read while still offering great factual information.

Hands-On Activity

Since we were reading about the gold rush, what better an activity than panning for gold. I dug out a small box of fool’s gold (pyrite) that I have had stashed away, scooped a bucketful of rocks from the local playground, and dumped them all into our water table. I gave them a pie pan and a sifter – and let them see what they could find.

It was a big hit!

Panning for Gold

After this, we talked about the value and appeal of gold, and what would happen if we came across gold – how it would change our life, if we would be willing to share or tell people where we found it, and whether it would be worth all the struggles the gold rushers faced.

Check out what my other co-hosts were reading and doing this month all about the Wild West, and link up your fun book!
