Peppermint Stick Learning Co – High School

Last year, I shared with you a company called Peppermint Stick Learning Co – a Canadian Christian curriculum company based out of Ontario that creates and compiles a variety of curriculum resources for grades K – 8. Well, they are excited to have shared with me that they have been working hard to put together a curriculum for high school and have finally finished updating their website with their new materials.

Peppermint Stick Learning Company

Take a look at their catalogue’s high school section for their secondary school planning guide and grade by grade outline for details of subjects and materials – along the how to purchase textbooks and resources. Many of the text books are published by Nelson – a well known educational publishers.

The subjects that Peppermint Stick Learning Company help homeschoolers with are:

  • Math
  • Science
  • French
  • English
  • History
  • Geography
  • Civics
  • and more!

Remember that none of these courses are offered credit through Peppermint Learning Co – you will need to decide if they match your high school plans.

Be sure to check out the rest of the High School Resources page too – Joy and gang have taken the time to really offer other great resources that explain things like career training options (such as apprenticeships, co-op placements, etc), comparing online/virtual schools in both Canada and the US, and accreditation information.

HistoricPlaces.ca

Did you know that across Canada there are certain locations that have been designated as “Historic Places” – usually with a plaque to commemorate the area?  Each spot has a special significance to the history of the local area.

Apparently over 20% of Canada’s historical places have already been wiped out across the country.

HistoricalPlaces.ca is working on the monumental task of compiling all the information available on each location across Canada that has been included in the Canadian Register of Historic Places. They have pictures – some historic and some recent. They’ve summed up the historical significance and all sorts of tidbits and facts (including architectural data!)

There is a search engine. Just type in the name of the area you want to look at and they will come up with a list of local places. Then you click on the name of the historic place to get more information. There is an advanced search too – where you can put in more detailed information (like “Stanley Park”) to narrow your search.

historic place is a structure, building, group of buildings, district, landscape, archaeological site or other place in Canada that has been formally recognized for its heritage value by an appropriate authority within a jurisdiction.

If there’s a place near you that needs nomination to be entered into the Canadian Register of Historic Places, this website tells you the steps needed to get that place nominated.

I found this site a great way to find local moments of history and unique places to visit. It would be great for a trip across country, or even just to have a day trip adventure in your own town.

Excellent Resources

When attending the Homeschool Convention back in June, I knew I wanted two things, a writing program and a socials curriculum with a Canadian focus. You can only imagine my extreme excitement when I came across a company who managed to incorporate both! I love when I can find curriculums that cover more than one subject especially since my kids have been asking to learn more about Canada, its history and our provinces.

When researching their website I found this information about them:

“Excellent Resources Inc.is the Canadian Distributor for The Institute for Excellence in Writing, a highly effective, award-winning program by its Director Andrew Pudewa based on the “Blended Structure & Style” program of teaching writing by Dr. J.B.Webster.”

I am choosing to do a review today on The Excellence in Writing program that is integrated with Canadian History.

Professor Noggin

I have a challenge for you. See how many of the following questions you can answer:

1. Jeanne Sauve was the first female to hold what office?

2. What fur-trading company, founded in 1670, is the oldest existing company in Canada?

3. What is Craigellachie?

4. What did Frederick Banting and Charles Best discover in 1921?

5. What NHL team has won the most Stanley Cups?

These are just a few of the many questions in the card game #20 from Professor Noggin: History of Canada. This game is very challenging! It’s a great way to recall history facts and find out things you didn’t know before. (Let’s just say, hubby and I tried asking questions of each other for quite a while and were definitely challenged!) For students, it’s a great way to put history into a fun new format, refresh and remind lessons learned, and reinforce the facts.

But Professor Noggin has a lot more games than just Canadian history. They have several topics: history, science, geography, mythology, nature, and more. At the moment, there are 37 different titles.

Each box comes with a set of trivia cards. On the front is artwork to share the topic of that card, and the back as a set of questions, divided into easy and hard categories. You roll the special enclosed dice, ask the corresponding question and try to answer correctly. If right – the card is yours. If wrong, the card goes back in the pile for another time around.

To see a full list of available titles (which includes this History of Canada and a geography of Canada), and to find out where you can buy them, please visit www.professornoggin.com

And for those of you who want to know…. here are the answers: 1. Governor general 2. Hudson’s Bay Company 3. Location where the last spike of the railway was driven in. 4. Insulin. 5. Montreal Canadiens
